However, radiologists’ work and evaluation have become more isolated from the rest of the medical teams’ work, allowing them to focus solely on their reads for various patients. This isolation has only become more of a prevalent concern with the ability of radiologists to access PACS and viewing systems while working from home.

By the end of 2019, the global market size was valued at USD 3.6 billion. As North American countries continue to lead the demand for diagnostic imaging, we are also seeing a rise in the Asia Pacific region due to supportive regulations from their governments. Before the introduction of PACS systems, diagnosing radiologists would read at medical or imaging facilities and physically meet with attending physicians working cases. This led to the radiologist’s enhanced understanding of the clinical problem and how imaging results led to more meaningful reports.

My workstation is connected to the central system via a secure VPN tunnel administered by Region Skåne. The Internet I use is a regular home fiber connection, with a 100 Mbps download speed and 10 Mbps upload speed. This set-up works very well for me, and my review performance is as good as it is onsite at the hospital. In February this year, we started with a PACS-driven workflow, which considerably facilitates the review since there is no RIS that I need to log into anymore. In addition, speech recognition is completely integrated into the PACS, which makes it very convenient to dictate.
“You also have the opportunity to stop in and read for hospital radiologists who don’t have the experience in your area of expertise,” Dr. Yuz concludes. There’s the radiologist who performs occasional reading and reporting of exams, in case of an emergency or request for a second opinion, for example. I use the integrated chat functionality in PACS a lot to communicate with my colleagues. It allows us to create groups so we can share and discuss cases, to see where everyone is physically located, and if they are active or offline. It has proven particularly beneficial in these special times—so beneficial, in fact, that even the technologists and radiology nurses now have started to use the chat functionality. In fact, they tend to work more than if they work in a medical or imaging center.
Lunch breaks have been redistributed, meetings are taking place in larger rooms or via Skype, and training of residents is no longer taking place at workstations but in MDT rooms, for example. Artificial intelligence in medical imaging is a topic of much debate and insufficient consensus. A growing number of healthcare facilities are organising based on the Value-Based Healthcare principles. The reasons to facilitate it, such as work-life balance or on-call availability, were hard to balance against high costs and specific technical requirements. With social distancing in the balance, we are seeing a faster pace toward implementation. With artificial intelligence in radiology discussions on the rise, many practitioners wrestle with its accuracy and whether it can be a threat to job security.
